Thoughts on the Indian media
Been some time since I posted here....and I go with something that I've been concerned about for some time now.
We live in the information age. We are told that we have the "right to information". We are told that we have a "free press". We are also told to be proud of being the largest democracy in the world.
We are also told about the issues facing the people like Crime, Poverty, Illiteracy, Financial exclusion, Inflation, Fiscal Deficit and what not.It appears that everyone is focused completely on the effects of the system that we have.
What nobody seems to be interested is the causes of the same. We are tending (increasingly) towards following the American model of capitalism. But the same form of capitalism took the US to where it is today. Yet we continue to follow them.
The reason as I see it is that the media is too focused on micro issues and keeps the people busy with useless stuff. We hear in the news about Marathi manus, UP ke bhaiya and Rakhi ki shadi and what not ....we get to hear about a bomb blast 1000 times before the coverage goes down. We are all basically made to live in a perpetual fear of everything.....The biggest fear being lack of approval by the society and the opposite sex (Which is propagated most intensely by the media through the use of carefully planned programming and advertisements) . This essentially does the job of keeping the people absorbed in their insecurities and away from asking the questions that matter.
